ChatGPT ads are real: OpenAI began testing them in the US in early 2026 and, as of October 2026, has extended them to dozens of countries, including India (reported live from late August 2026). They appear as labelled sponsored units for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, and advertisers cannot see people's conversations. Whether you should buy them now depends on your market, your tracking and your appetite for an unproven channel. Details change often, so check OpenAI's official ads pages before committing budget.
I run digital marketing for businesses in India and abroad, and this question has started arriving in client calls. This post separates what has been announced and widely reported from what is still unclear. Where I could not confirm something from OpenAI directly, I say so. Everything below is as of October 2026.
What has actually been announced
OpenAI has described a phased rollout. It started as a US test, moved to managed buying through OpenAI's own Ads Solutions team plus agency and technology partners, and then expanded country by country. OpenAI's own posts talk about availability in "over 40" and later "more than 60" countries, with recent expansions into South-East Asia and Taiwan. Trade press reports a self-serve Ads Manager in the US, with CPC (cost per click) bidding added alongside CPM (cost per thousand impressions).
A caution on sources. OpenAI's own pages are the authority here, but my access to some of them was limited while researching, so part of this comes from trade coverage (for example PPC Land, Search Engine Land and Search Engine Journal) that quotes OpenAI's announcements and help-centre pages. Those outlets disagree on some dates. Treat dates and feature lists as "reported", not final.
Where ads appear and in what formats
Per OpenAI's stated principles, ads are labelled as sponsored, sit separately from ChatGPT's answer (reported as appearing below a response when a relevant product or service is identified), and are not supposed to influence what ChatGPT says. OpenAI says answers stay independent of advertising.
Formats reported so far are static ads and product ads. Product ads draw on a product feed you supply; OpenAI has reportedly updated the product card to show price and ratings. Some guides mention text, image, conversational and video formats, but those are less well documented, and I could not verify them from a primary source. Do not plan a campaign around a format until you see it inside the ads dashboard.
Which markets and plans are included
| Question | What is reported | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Who sees ads? | Logged-in adults on Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise stay ad-free. | High, repeated by OpenAI and press |
| Who is excluded? | Users who are, or are predicted to be, under 18. Sensitive or regulated topics such as mental health and politics. | High for the principle; exact topic list not verified by me |
| India? | Reported live from about 27–29 August 2026. Buying via OpenAI's Ads Solutions team and partners. Self-serve described as "coming soon", though some outlets gave a September date. | Medium; reports conflict |
| India minimum spend? | A minimum daily campaign spend of ₹725 was reported from OpenAI's help centre. | Medium; check the help centre |
| Europe? | Rolled out to many European markets in August 2026; personalised advertising was reported as not initially available in the EEA and Switzerland. | Medium |
Because Free and Go are the ad-supported plans, your audience is people on lower-cost or free plans. That says nothing definitive about purchasing power; it simply means paying subscribers are not reachable.
How targeting and measurement work, as far as verified
Targeting. Ads are reported to be matched to the context of the conversation, with additional signals in some markets. OpenAI has said that advertisers do not get access to conversations or personal data and receive aggregated reporting. What I could not confirm is how much of the personalised targeting works in India. Reports say it is unclear, and I would not assume it.
Bidding. CPM and CPC are reported options in markets with the self-serve tool. Whether India gets both at launch is not something I could verify.
Measurement. OpenAI offers a browser pixel and a server-side Conversions API, and has added technology and measurement partners. These let you record actions such as purchases or lead submissions after an ad interaction. Reports also mention conversion-based optimisation, but availability depends on account and market. App attribution partners were reported in a handful of markets; whether India is included is not stated.
Plan for aggregated, campaign-level reporting. You will not see which prompts triggered your ad, so you cannot run the keyword-level search-term analysis you may be used to.
What advertisers can and cannot control
- You can usually control: budget, creative, destination URL, product feed (for product ads), bidding approach where offered, and conversion events you send back.
- You cannot control: what ChatGPT answers say about you, whether your ad sits next to the organic mention of a competitor, or the conversation text. You also cannot buy your way into an answer. Sponsored units are separate from the response.
- Unclear: negative targeting or exclusion controls, placement reporting, and brand-safety tooling. Ask your OpenAI contact or partner exactly what exists in your market before you spend.
Privacy and brand-safety questions to ask
- What data does the pixel or Conversions API send, and does my consent banner cover it?
- Does the ad system use chat content for targeting in my market, and can a user switch personalisation off?
- What adjacency or topic exclusions can I set, and who verifies them?
- For regulated sectors (finance, health, education, legal), are my ad categories allowed at all?
India's Digital Personal Data Protection Rules were published in November 2025, and most obligations are expected to apply later, around 2027. If you collect leads through ads, build consent and data-handling practices now rather than later. I am not a lawyer; get legal advice for your own situation.
How ChatGPT ads differ from Google and Meta ads
| Aspect | Google Ads | Meta ads | ChatGPT ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intent signal | Search query you can see and bid on | Interest and behaviour profile | Conversation context; prompts not shown to you |
| Targeting control | Deep, mature | Deep, mature | Narrower and still evolving |
| Measurement | Mature, many integrations | Mature, many integrations | Pixel, Conversions API, growing partners |
| Track record | Years of benchmarks | Years of benchmarks | Very new; few reliable benchmarks |
| Audience | Almost everyone online | Social users | Free and Go users only |
The practical point: with search ads you bid on words. With ChatGPT ads you pay to be shown alongside a conversation you cannot fully see. Expect to learn by testing rather than by following a playbook.
Ads are not the same as AI search visibility
This is the part many businesses miss. A paid ad is a sponsored slot. Being named or cited inside ChatGPT's answer is a different outcome, earned through clear content, entity signals and trustworthy sources. Paying does not get you cited, and being cited does not cost anything per click.
That second goal is what answer engine optimisation and generative engine optimisation are about. If you have not done the groundwork, start with my AEO and GEO checklist for business websites. In my view, visibility work comes first because it is cheaper to keep and also makes your ad landing pages stronger.
Who should consider ChatGPT ads, and who should wait
| Consider testing | Wait |
|---|---|
| You already run profitable search or social ads and have spare test budget | Your conversion tracking is broken or missing |
| Your product is researched through questions (comparisons, "which is best", how-to) | Your category is in a sensitive or restricted area |
| You sell in a market where self-serve is already live | You need predictable monthly leads and cannot absorb a learning period |
| You have a product feed and clean landing pages | Your audience is mostly older, offline or non-English-search users |
What do ChatGPT ads cost?
I will not give you a typical cost, because I have not seen verified benchmarks and anything quoted today is likely to be someone's guess. What is reported: pricing is auction-based, CPM and CPC models exist in some markets, and India has a reported minimum daily spend of ₹725. Your real cost per lead will depend on category competition, creative, landing page quality, and how well your conversion events are set up. Decide a test budget you can lose without hurting the business, run it for a fixed period, and judge it against your existing channels. If you use an agency or partner, ask for their fees in writing, separate from media spend.
Readiness checklist for Indian and international businesses
- Tracking first. Confirm GA4 and your CRM record leads and sales correctly. Tag every ad URL consistently; my UTM builder and UTM naming guide help.
- Conversion events. Decide the one or two actions that matter (qualified lead, purchase) and plan the pixel and server-side events for them.
- Landing pages. People arriving from a chat have often already compared options. Give them a direct answer, proof, pricing context and one clear action, and make sure the page loads fast on mobile.
- Product feed (retail). Clean titles, accurate prices, availability, images. Wrong data will look worse in a product card than in a search listing.
- Consent and privacy. Update your cookie banner and privacy policy to cover new tags. For international traffic, check GDPR and local rules.
- Budget approach. Treat it as an experiment line, separate from core channels. Set a stop-loss, a review date and the metric you will judge it on before you launch.
- Currency and billing. Indian advertisers should confirm INR billing, GST treatment and invoicing; international advertisers should confirm currency and tax handling in their market.
- Organic visibility. Do the AEO and GEO groundwork in parallel. See AI search visibility.
Honest uncertainties
- No independent, verified performance benchmarks exist yet that I trust, so I quote none.
- India self-serve timing, bidding options and personalisation scope were unclear or conflicting in reports.
- Formats, objectives and policies are changing quickly; this post may date within weeks.
- Whether users will accept, ignore or resent ads in chat is not yet known.
Frequently asked questions
Can I advertise on ChatGPT from India?
Reports say ChatGPT ads went live in India in late August 2026, with early buying through OpenAI's Ads Solutions team and partners. Most later reports say a self-serve Ads Manager opened in early September 2026, while some earlier coverage still described it as coming, so check OpenAI's own ads pages for the current position. Check ads.openai.com and OpenAI's help centre for what is open to your account today.
Do ChatGPT ads show to paying users?
No. Ads are reported for logged-in adults on Free and Go plans only. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans stay ad-free, and under-18 accounts are excluded.
Do ChatGPT ads change the answers ChatGPT gives?
OpenAI says they do not. Ads are labelled and separate from the answer. This is OpenAI's stated position, and independent verification is limited.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost in India?
There is no verified benchmark I can share. A minimum daily spend of ₹725 was reported from OpenAI's help centre, and the rest is auction-based. Confirm the current figure on the official page.
Is advertising the same as getting recommended by ChatGPT?
No. An ad is a paid, labelled placement. Being recommended in the answer comes from content and authority, which is the focus of AEO and GEO work.
A sensible next step
If you are unsure whether to test ChatGPT ads, fix your tracking, or invest in AI search visibility first, a 30-minute strategy session (₹2,999 + GST intro offer) is a low-cost way to decide with someone who looks at your numbers. Before you spend, re-check OpenAI's official ads pages, because this space moves quickly.
