Johannesburg is the commercial heart of South Africa, with long B2B sales cycles, many decision-makers and heavy reliance on relationships and credentials. I work remotely from Delhi NCR with no local office. This page explains how I help Johannesburg companies organise their sales story, materials and follow-up.

How B2B buyers decide in Johannesburg

Corporate and industrial buyers in Johannesburg rarely decide quickly. Several people are involved, procurement rules apply, and trust in the supplier matters. Buyers look for evidence of capability, references, compliance and the ability to deliver reliably, often before they speak to a salesperson.

That means the website, company profile and sales deck do heavy lifting. They need to answer the questions a committee asks when you are not in the room: who are you, what have you done, how do you work, what will it cost to start and what happens if something goes wrong.

Because decisions are shared, I encourage teams to write for the person who will forward your material. That reader has to explain you to a colleague in two sentences, so give them those sentences and a short document that supports them.

Channels and the local business landscape

Google is the main search tool, and LinkedIn is highly important for B2B visibility. Industry associations, trade events, referral networks and email still drive much of the pipeline. WhatsApp is widely used for quick coordination, though formal quotes and agreements move through email and documents.

For consumer-facing businesses in the city, Facebook, Instagram and local marketplaces matter, but my main focus here is B2B and professional services, where the marketing job is to support salespeople with credible material.

Sectors and their common problems

Financial services, mining and industrial services, professional services, logistics, telecoms, technology and property are all strong in Gauteng. Financial services must balance trust and regulation. Industrial suppliers often have thin websites and rely on reputation. Professional firms struggle to show the difference between their offering and competitors'.

Technology and logistics firms tend to have strong products and long, technical sales conversations. The marketing problem is converting capability into plain explanations and consistent presentations that every salesperson can use.

Johannesburg is also a gateway for companies selling into the rest of Africa. If that is your plan, your materials should explain which countries you serve, how you deliver and how you handle currency and compliance differences, instead of implying a single regional offer.

What to localise and demonstrate

Many South African buyers look for evidence of broad-based black economic empowerment status and compliance credentials when selecting suppliers, so displaying current certificates and accreditations clearly can matter. Show registered company details, relevant industry memberships and safety or quality standards where they apply.

Use South African English, prices in rand with VAT clarity, and be careful with data. The Protection of Personal Information Act applies to how you collect and store leads. Confirm current rules with a local adviser, particularly for regulated sectors.

Tenders, procurement and credibility material

Larger Johannesburg buyers, including corporates and public-sector bodies, often work through formal procurement. That means supplier registration, compliance documents, tax clearance, references and sometimes tender responses. Marketing does not replace those, but it can make them easy to find and present consistently.

I recommend a clear credentials page and a downloadable capability statement that your team keeps current. When a buyer is shortlisting suppliers at speed, being the one whose information is complete and well organised is a quiet advantage.

The same logic applies to case descriptions. Describe the situation, what you did and how the client's team worked with you, using only information you are allowed to share. Detail builds confidence more than adjectives do.

Working across the time zone

Johannesburg is on South Africa Standard Time, three and a half hours behind India, with no daylight saving. A typical 09:00 to 17:00 day there corresponds to 12:30 to 20:30 IST, and with my working day of roughly 10:00 to 19:00 IST we overlap from 12:30 to 19:00 IST, which is 09:00 to 15:30 in Johannesburg.

Meetings fit comfortably in that window. For presentation work, I share drafts as slides and short recordings so decision-makers can review on their own schedule. I have no local office. International clients pay a flat USD price agreed up front.

A sensible first 30 to 60 days

Start with the sales conversation. I ask your team what they hear from prospects: the objections, the questions and the criteria used to choose a supplier. Those answers shape the website, the deck and the follow-up process more reliably than guesses.

Then we align the website and presentation messaging, and define opportunity stages and follow-up tasks in whatever tool you use. By day 60 you should have consistent materials, a clearer pipeline view and a short list of improvements to your lead handling. I do not promise pipeline outcomes.

I need access to your website, current presentation decks and any CRM or pipeline spreadsheet, plus time with one or two salespeople to hear how conversations really go. I also need to know who owns the pipeline and who signs off on messaging.

If you have lost deals recently, a candid summary of why is one of the most valuable inputs I can receive.

  • Collect objections and decision criteria from the sales team.
  • Rebuild core website and deck messaging to match.
  • Define opportunity stages and follow-up rules.
  • Track enquiries from first touch to proposal.
  • Review monthly with sales and leadership.

Mistakes to avoid, and who this is for

Marketing and sales working from different stories is the most common problem. Another is a sales deck that is a list of services rather than an answer to a buyer's risk. Leads are often logged inconsistently, making follow-up depend on memory.

Some firms invest in awareness before fixing credibility material. A buyer who finds your site thin will not remember your campaign.

It suits Johannesburg B2B businesses and professional firms that need clearer materials and a better-organised sales process, supported by a senior consultant remotely.

It is not for those who need in-person pitch coaching, event staffing or an on-site account team. I can build and review the materials, but I do not attend meetings in person.

In long B2B sales, your website and deck work for you in meetings you will never attend.
