Lisbon sits at a crossroads of languages and audiences: Portuguese locals, an international start-up and remote-work community, tourists and residents relocating from abroad. I work remotely from Delhi NCR with no local office. This page covers how I help Lisbon businesses structure language versions and service pages without confusion.

How different audiences in Lisbon research and decide

Lisbon businesses often serve at least two groups: Portuguese-speaking residents and international customers. Locals tend to value personal recommendation, clear pricing and a trustworthy appearance. International residents and visitors search in English, read reviews on platforms outside Google and expect clear, quick answers.

In relocation, real estate, hospitality, professional services and education, the decision usually takes time and involves comparing several providers. People want to see experience with situations like theirs and a straightforward way to ask a question.

Reviews on external platforms matter in hospitality and services for foreigners. Respond to them politely and consistently, and make it easy for satisfied customers to leave one.

Search, social and channels

Google is the main search engine, used in Portuguese and English. Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube are all relevant depending on audience, and WhatsApp is common for enquiries. Review platforms and travel sites influence hospitality and tourism heavily.

Because audiences differ, a single page in a single language rarely works. I help decide which content must exist in both languages, which can be shared and which needs a dedicated version.

Sectors and typical problems

Technology and start-ups, tourism and hospitality, real estate and relocation services, creative industries, and professional services for foreigners are prominent. Lisbon also hosts well-known international technology events, which has helped build its start-up reputation.

Start-ups need clear positioning for international customers. Tourism businesses face seasonality and review dependence. Relocation and professional services need to answer anxious, detailed questions in plain language and show credibility.

Whatever the sector, show who is behind the business. Names, faces and a clear location help both Portuguese and international visitors feel confident, particularly when they are about to pay for something they cannot inspect first.

Because English is widely spoken among professionals in Lisbon, some businesses decide not to localise at all. That can work for international clients but may weaken trust among local ones, so check who actually buys from you before deciding.

What to localise

European Portuguese differs from Brazilian Portuguese in vocabulary and phrasing, so copy for Portugal should be written or reviewed by a speaker of the European variety. English should be natural, not literal. Show prices in euros with VAT clear, and offer payment methods people use locally, including Multibanco references and mobile payment apps.

GDPR applies, and cookie consent should be implemented before tracking starts. Portuguese consumer rules apply to offers and refunds. Confirm current requirements with a local adviser.

Check small practical details such as date and number formats, phone numbers in international form and opening hours that account for local holidays. These details seem minor but they are what a visitor uses when deciding whether the business is real and reachable.

Relocation, tourism and the international resident

Lisbon attracts newcomers: remote workers, entrepreneurs, students and families. Their questions are practical and specific, about neighbourhoods, paperwork, schools, services and costs. Businesses that answer these clearly, in English and Portuguese where relevant, earn trust before any sales conversation begins.

Content that explains a process step by step, with honest notes about what can go wrong, often serves better than glossy promotion. I help structure service pages and guides so that each addresses one real question and leads to a sensible next step.

Seasonality matters too. Tourism peaks over summer, August is a common holiday month for local businesses and demand for relocation services follows its own calendar. Plan content and staffing with those periods in mind.

Working across the time zone

Lisbon is on Western European Time, five and a half hours behind India in winter and four and a half hours behind during summer time, which runs from late March to late October. A 09:00 to 17:00 day is 14:30 to 22:30 IST in winter and 13:30 to 21:30 IST in summer.

With my working day of roughly 10:00 to 19:00 IST, we overlap from 14:30 to 19:00 IST in winter (09:00 to 13:30 in Lisbon) and from 13:30 to 19:00 IST in summer (09:00 to 14:30). I can extend into my evening for key calls. I have no local office. International clients pay a flat USD price agreed up front.

A sensible first 30 to 60 days

Begin by confirming the intended markets and languages. Who are you trying to reach first, and in which language will they search? That decides the site structure more than any design preference.

Then map service pages to audience questions, set a clear approval process for each language and make the enquiry route obvious. By day 60 you should have an agreed structure, content under review and a working enquiry process. I do not promise outcomes.

I need access to your website, analytics and social accounts, a clear statement of the audiences and languages you want to prioritise, and the names of your native reviewers for Portuguese and English. I also need to know how enquiries are answered today and by whom.

A short list of the questions customers ask most often is one of the most useful things you can send me.

  • Confirm intended markets and languages.
  • Map service pages to the questions each audience asks.
  • Decide which content is shared and which is dedicated.
  • Appoint reviewers for each language.
  • Set up an enquiry process and measurement.

Mistakes to avoid, and who this is for

Using Brazilian Portuguese for a Portuguese audience, or auto-translating without review, is a frequent error. Another is duplicating a site in two languages without a plan to keep both current. Some businesses ignore the international audience, others ignore local customers.

Hiding practical details such as price ranges, location and process leaves visitors guessing.

It suits Lisbon businesses serving more than one audience that want a clear website structure, language plan and enquiry process.

It is not for those needing Portuguese copywriting from me, or in-person workshops. I direct structure and strategy and recommend native reviewers.

Decide who you are writing for and in which language before you design a single page.
