Hong Kong sits between Chinese and international business, with Cantonese, English and increasingly Mandarin in daily use. This page covers how that shapes site structure and sales messaging, how buyers research, what to localise, and how I work with Hong Kong businesses across a two and a half hour time difference.
Three languages, one customer journey
Hong Kong customers may read in traditional Chinese characters, in English, or in both, and spoken Cantonese is the everyday language for many. Mandarin matters for mainland-facing business. Which language you lead with depends on who you sell to. A local consumer service often needs Chinese first, while an international trading or finance firm may lead in English with Chinese available.
I ask clients to be specific about their top customers and write down what language each reads and speaks. That decides the structure of the site. Traditional Chinese for Hong Kong and simplified Chinese for mainland audiences are not interchangeable, and a page in one should not be passed off as the other.
How people search and shop
Google is available and widely used in Hong Kong, alongside local portals, and Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and WhatsApp are very common. For mainland-facing work, platforms from the mainland come into play, and they follow different rules and require separate accounts and strategy. Restaurants, property, travel and shopping each have well-known local platforms and review sites.
People are mobile-first, comparison-minded and quick to move on if a page is slow or unclear. Payments include cards, wallets and local transfer systems, and delivery is fast by many standards. Competition is dense, so businesses benefit from a very clear offer and a visible way to contact someone, often through WhatsApp.
Reviews and word of mouth are powerful in a dense, connected city. People ask friends, check popular review sites and compare quickly. Keep business details consistent across every listing, and reply to reviews politely and promptly, including the critical ones.
Sectors and the problem each has
Finance, trading, logistics, professional services, property, retail, luxury goods, tourism and education all matter. Financial and professional firms face credibility and regulation. Trading and logistics firms have deep relationships and thin web presence. Retail and hospitality compete on location, price and image. Luxury needs precise tone. Education serves parents and students who want evidence and clarity.
For many Hong Kong businesses the specific problem is complexity: a long list of products or services, several customer types, and no clear hierarchy. The website becomes a catalogue. A better approach is to establish what matters most to the buyer, show it first and let detail follow.
Simplifying the offer hierarchy
I start by listing every product or service and ranking them by commercial importance and by how often customers ask about them. The top few get clear pages. The rest are grouped or placed behind them. Navigation is then built around customer questions: what do you offer, is it right for me, how much, how do I start?
Sales messaging follows the same hierarchy. A salesperson, a website and a brochure should agree on the headline, the three or four main points and the proof. If each uses different language, prospects notice. A short messaging document, in each language you use, keeps the team consistent. Website Design and Development and CRM and Custom Software are where this gets implemented.
Pricing display needs the same discipline. If you quote by enquiry only, say what affects the price and how quickly a quote follows. Buyers in a fast market will move to the next supplier if they cannot tell whether it is worth asking.
What to localise and check
Use traditional Chinese for Hong Kong audiences, with native review for tone, since written Chinese and spoken Cantonese differ and formal and informal registers are distinct. Prices are in Hong Kong dollars, usually without added sales tax, though you should confirm your own situation. Show business registration, licences and contact details where buyers expect them.
Hong Kong has a personal data privacy ordinance that includes rules on direct marketing and consent. Mainland China has separate and strict rules on data, content and platforms, which apply if you serve customers there. I am not a lawyer, so confirm with advisers in each jurisdiction. Calendar planning should include Lunar New Year, Mid-Autumn, summer holidays and major shopping periods.
I should be plain about one limit. I work from Delhi NCR and I am not a Cantonese copywriter. For Chinese content, I prepare structure and briefs and coordinate with a native writer or your team. For mainland platforms, a specialist who works inside them day to day is the right partner.
Working across a two and a half hour gap
Hong Kong is eight hours ahead of UTC with no daylight saving, so it is two and a half hours ahead of India all year. Nine in the morning in Hong Kong is half past six in the morning for me, and four in the afternoon is half past one. The comfortable overlap is Hong Kong late morning to late afternoon.
I can start early for important morning meetings. A weekly call, a shared document and a written summary after each session works well. Severe weather, such as typhoon signals, can close offices and schools at short notice in Hong Kong; I plan schedules with some slack for that and use asynchronous work to keep projects moving.
First 30 to 60 days
The first two weeks cover language and audience decisions, the content inventory and an audit of enquiries: where they come from, who answers and how quickly. I then draft the offer hierarchy and messaging document, and review them with you and your sales team.
The next weeks go to restructured pages, Chinese and English versions, forms and tracking, and the CRM stages that connect enquiries to follow-up. By the end of month two, you should have simpler pages, clearer messages and a record of which enquiries turned into conversations. Timing depends on the number of products and the speed of Chinese content review.
Where several people review, I ask for one final approver per language. Chinese and English versions can otherwise drift, as each reviewer corrects only the version they read. A single owner keeps both aligned and avoids last-minute contradictions.
Mistakes, and who this is for
Mistakes I see: machine-translated Chinese, mixing traditional and simplified characters, giving every product equal weight, forgetting WhatsApp as an enquiry route, and leaving leads with no named owner.
This suits Hong Kong businesses with several services or audiences that want clearer structure and consistent follow-up, and international firms entering through Hong Kong. It does not suit those wanting an on-site team, native Cantonese copywriting from me, or mainland platform management without a specialist partner. International clients pay flat USD pricing, agreed in writing.
