Nairobi is East Africa's main business and technology hub, with a mobile-first population and mobile money at the centre of commerce. I work remotely from Delhi NCR with no local office. This page covers how I approach Kenyan customers, what to build first and how our working hours line up.

How customers in Kenya research and buy

Kenyan consumers are highly mobile, active on social platforms and comfortable paying by mobile money. Many first encounter a business on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or WhatsApp rather than in a search result, and they expect to ask questions by message before paying. Trust is built through visible responsiveness and recommendations.

For B2B, NGOs, and institutional buyers, formal documentation, registration details and references carry weight. A website that clearly states who you are, what you do and how to engage is often the first filter.

Delivery and addresses can be informal in some areas, so collect practical details such as landmarks and phone numbers at checkout. Small touches like this reduce failed deliveries and refund requests more than most advertising changes do.

Channels and platforms

Google is the main search engine, and mobile data costs and connection quality mean pages should be light and fast. Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and X are widely used, and YouTube is strong for learning and entertainment. Jumia and a growing set of social commerce sellers are part of the retail picture.

M-Pesa is central to payments, so any online sales or booking flow should consider mobile money alongside cards. Language mixes English, Swahili and often Sheng informally; the right mix depends on your audience and brand.

Sectors and typical problems

Financial technology, agriculture and agribusiness, tourism, healthcare, education, logistics, development organisations and a lively start-up scene shape Nairobi's economy. Start-ups often have a good product and a patchy website. Agribusiness and logistics firms may sell mostly through relationships and need a credible online presence to support them.

Tourism and hospitality serve international visitors, whose booking journey is long and trust-sensitive. Development and non-profit organisations need clear reporting and donor-friendly information.

Nairobi's start-up community is closely connected to investors and partners abroad, so many young companies have two audiences: Kenyan customers and international stakeholders. Their websites often serve one well and the other poorly. Separating the messages by page, instead of mixing them, usually helps both.

What to localise

Write in clear English for most business audiences and add Swahili where it serves customers, reviewed by a native speaker. Price in Kenyan shillings, support mobile money, show delivery coverage honestly and keep pages light.

Kenya has a Data Protection Act, and businesses that collect personal data may have registration and consent obligations. Confirm the current position with a local adviser before launching forms, tracking or marketing lists.

Test everything on a real mid-range Android phone over a mobile connection, not just on an office laptop. Check how forms behave, how long the first screen takes to appear and whether the chat button is easy to tap. Findings from that one session often shape the whole first phase.

Mobile money, messaging and the real checkout

In Kenya, the buying journey often ends in a mobile money prompt or a chat, not a card form. If your site asks customers to leave and find another way to pay, you add friction. A clear instruction for paying by mobile money, followed by an automatic confirmation, can be the most important design decision on the page.

Messaging is just as practical. Provide a WhatsApp or call button that works on a small screen, and agree who answers and during which hours. If you cannot staff it, say so honestly and offer a callback form.

Where integrations are needed, such as a payment API or a CRM, I define the access, data and security requirements early. Surprises at that stage cost far more than a clear scoping conversation.

Working across the time zone

Nairobi is on East Africa Time, two and a half hours behind India, with no daylight saving. A 09:00 to 17:00 day in Nairobi is 11:30 to 19:30 IST, so with my working day of roughly 10:00 to 19:00 IST we share about 11:30 to 19:00 IST, which is 09:00 to 16:30 in Nairobi.

That covers nearly the whole Kenyan business day. I use short calls and written summaries. I have no local office. International clients pay a flat USD price agreed up front.

A realistic 30 to 60 days

First, map the current enquiry workflow, from the first message to the delivered service. Many Nairobi businesses handle this over WhatsApp, calls and spreadsheets, and the aim is to make it visible, not necessarily to replace it overnight.

Then choose the first useful online interaction, such as a booking form, a quote request or a product enquiry page, and build it well on mobile. Define what data and access any integration will need. By day 60 you should have one working improvement and a clear order for the next. I do not promise outcomes.

I need a short description of how an enquiry travels through your business today, access to your website, social accounts and any analytics, and a list of the systems you already use for payments, orders or customer records.

Please also share your constraints: team size, budget range and any compliance obligations. A plan sized to your capacity will be used; an ambitious one will sit in a folder.

  • Map the enquiry and fulfilment workflow.
  • Choose one useful online interaction to build first.
  • Build for fast loading on mobile.
  • Define access and data needs for any integrations.
  • Track enquiries by source.

Mistakes to avoid, and who this is for

Building a large desktop-style site that loads slowly on mobile data is common. Another is ignoring M-Pesa and then wondering why people drop out at checkout. Businesses also often keep customer details only in chat threads, so nothing is measurable.

Overseas brands sometimes underestimate how local the buying habits are and rely on global templates.

It suits Nairobi businesses bringing more of their customer journey online and wanting a practical, staged plan with clear priorities, supported remotely.

It is not suited to those who need an on-site team, field data collection or hardware deployment. I focus on strategy, websites and systems.

In Nairobi, build for the phone first, and make mobile money and messaging part of the design.
