What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are little tags you add to the end of a URL so analytics tools (like Google Analytics 4) can tell exactly where a visitor came from — which source, channel, and campaign drove the click. Without them, most paid and social traffic gets lumped into vague buckets like “referral” or “direct,” and you can’t tell which ad or campaign actually worked. Consistent naming is everything: pick a convention (all lowercase, underscores instead of spaces) and stick to it so your reports stay clean.

How to use UTM links on your ad platforms
Tag every paid and email link and your analytics will finally show which campaigns drive real results.
Meta Ads — Facebook & Instagram
In Ads Manager, open your ad and find Tracking → URL parameters (or “Build a URL parameter”). Paste your parameters there — without the leading ?.
Recommended: source = facebook, medium = paid_social. Use dynamic values like {{campaign.name}}, {{adset.name}} and {{ad.name}} for utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content so every ad reports separately. Tip: {{site_source_name}} tells Facebook and Instagram traffic apart.
Google Ads
If auto-tagging (GCLID) is on and your account is linked to GA4, you usually don’t need manual UTMs — Google passes campaign, ad group and keyword data automatically.
Add manual UTMs (source = google, medium = cpc) only when you need the data in non-Google tools, via the Final URL suffix or tracking template. You can use ValueTrack values like {campaignid} and {keyword}. Avoid mixing conflicting tags.
LinkedIn, X & TikTok Ads
These platforms don’t auto-tag, so paste the full UTM link (built above) as your ad’s destination URL.
Recommended: medium = paid_social, source = the platform (linkedin, twitter, tiktok). Keep utm_campaign identical to the campaign name inside the platform so the two line up in reporting.
Email & Newsletters
Add the UTM link to your buttons and CTAs so opens that convert are credited to email, not “direct.”
Recommended: source = your list or tool (newsletter, mailchimp), medium = email, campaign = the send name (may_offer). For organic social bio links, use medium = social.

FAQ
UTM link questions, answered
Which UTM parameters do I actually need?
Three are essential: utm_source (where the traffic comes from, e.g. facebook), utm_medium (the channel, e.g. paid_social or cpc), and utm_campaign (the specific campaign). utm_term (paid keywords) and utm_content (to tell two versions of a link apart) are optional.
Do I need UTMs for Google Ads if auto-tagging is on?
Usually not. Google Ads auto-tagging adds a GCLID that automatically passes campaign, ad group, and keyword data to a linked GA4 property — that is the recommended setup. Add manual UTMs only when you need the data in a tool that does not read the GCLID, and avoid applying conflicting tags on top of auto-tagging.
How do I add UTM parameters in Facebook / Instagram (Meta) Ads?
In Meta Ads Manager, open the ad and find the "URL parameters" field under Tracking. Paste the parameters there without the leading question mark. You can also use Meta dynamic values such as {{campaign.name}}, {{adset.name}}, {{ad.name}} and {{site_source_name}} so each ad and placement is tracked separately.
Will UTM parameters hurt my SEO?
Not on the paid, social, and email links you tag — those are exactly where UTMs belong. Just do not add UTMs to internal links between your own pages, and never to links you want Google to index, because the extra parameters can create duplicate URLs. Your canonical tags will normally handle any that slip through.
Should I use spaces or capital letters in UTM values?
No. UTM values are case-sensitive, so "Facebook" and "facebook" show up as two different sources and split your data. Use all lowercase, and replace spaces with underscores (spring_sale, not "Spring Sale"). This builder can force lowercase for you automatically.
Where do I see the results in Google Analytics?
In GA4, go to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, then look at the Session source / medium and Session campaign dimensions. You can also build an Exploration to break performance down by source, medium, and campaign side by side.
Does this tool store my links or data?
No. The UTM builder runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is sent to a server or saved anywhere. It is completely free to use.
