Hire a growth marketing consultant in India when you have a product people already pay for, at least one channel that works a little, and a clear question you cannot answer internally, such as "which channel should we scale next" or "why do trial users not convert". Before that point, you usually need customer conversations and founder-led selling more than a growth consultant. Cost depends on scope: strategy-only advice costs far less than someone who also runs campaigns and experiments.
I am Kavish Arora, a digital marketing consultant in Delhi NCR with 15+ years in the field and Co-Founder & COO of DigiStreet Media. Founders often ask me which kind of growth marketer to hire, and the honest answer is that "growth marketer" means very different things to different people. This post is about timing and fit: when a growth consultant makes sense, which type suits your stage, what it costs and how to judge them.
What a growth marketing consultant actually does
A traditional marketing consultant tends to focus on acquisition: getting more people to the website or the sales team. A growth marketing consultant looks at the whole path, from first visit to signup, activation, purchase, repeat purchase and referral, and asks where the biggest leak or the biggest opportunity sits. The work usually includes:
- Mapping your funnel and finding the stage with the most room to improve
- Choosing which channels to test and in what order
- Designing experiments with a clear hypothesis and a measure of success
- Setting up the tracking needed to read those experiments honestly
- Working on onboarding, pricing pages, email and retention, not only ads
- Deciding what to stop, which is often as valuable as what to start
If someone describes growth marketing mainly as "hacks", be careful. Most durable growth comes from a few channels done well and a product that keeps customers.
When it is the right time to hire
| Your situation | Is a growth consultant the right hire? | What usually helps more |
|---|---|---|
| No paying customers yet | Usually not | Founder-led sales and customer interviews |
| Some customers, mostly from founder network or referrals | Sometimes, for a channel plan | A short strategy engagement to pick the first repeatable channel |
| One channel works, growth has plateaued | Yes, this is the classic fit | Consultant to test the next channel and fix funnel leaks |
| Spending on ads but cannot tell what works | Yes, but start with measurement | Tracking and attribution setup before new experiments |
| Good acquisition, weak retention | Yes, if they work on retention | Onboarding, lifecycle email, product feedback loops |
| Need someone to lead a marketing team | Probably not a consultant alone | A fractional CMO or a senior hire |
The common mistake is hiring a growth marketer to find product-market fit. A consultant can help you test messages and audiences, but they cannot make a product people do not want grow sustainably.
Which kind of growth marketer to hire
When founders ask "which growth marketer should I hire", I break the market into four types. None is better than the others; they suit different problems.
The channel specialist
Deep in one channel, such as paid search, paid social, SEO or marketplaces. Right when you already know which channel matters and need it done well. Wrong when you are still deciding where to play.
The growth generalist consultant
Looks across channels and the funnel, sets priorities and designs experiments, usually with your team or freelancers doing the execution. Right when you have a plateau and need a plan and a testing rhythm. Wrong if nobody internally can implement.
The fractional growth or marketing lead
Takes ownership of the marketing function for part of the week: hiring, managing vendors, reporting to founders. Right when marketing has become a team, not a task. I compare the options in fractional CMO cost in India.
The full-time growth hire
Right when you have enough steady work and budget for a permanent role, and you know what good looks like. Hiring full-time before you know which channels work often leads to a mismatch, because the person you need for one channel is rarely the person you need for another.

How much a growth marketing consultant costs in India
There is no standard rate. Cost depends on four drivers:
- Advice or execution. A consultant who sets strategy and reviews your team's work costs much less than one who also builds campaigns, writes copy and runs experiments.
- Hours per month. Weekly working sessions and fast replies cost more than a monthly review call.
- Seniority. Someone who has run growth across several businesses and channels charges more than someone with one channel's experience.
- Number of channels and markets. Testing three channels in two countries is more work than optimising one.
For reference, these are my own fees. They are not market averages; they simply show how scope changes price.
| Engagement | Fee | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 30-minute strategy session | ₹2,999 + GST (intro offer) | A specific question, or checking fit |
| 60-minute strategy session | ₹4,999 + GST | Reviewing a plan or funnel in more depth |
| Audit | ₹19,999 + GST | A written diagnosis of what is holding growth back |
| Audit + roadmap | ₹49,999 + GST | Diagnosis plus a prioritised plan your team can run |
| Monthly retainer | ₹75,000–₹1,50,000 + GST (10–25 hours) | Ongoing strategy, experiment design and review |
| Fractional CMO | From ₹1,50,000 + GST | Owning the marketing function part-time |
| Hands-on execution | From ₹2,50,000 + GST | Strategy plus delivery by a team |
GST applies to clients in India. International clients pay a flat USD fee. My longer breakdown is in digital marketing consultant cost in India.
Whoever you hire, keep ad spend and tool costs separate from the consultant's fee in your budget. A consultant who designs experiments still needs budget to run them.
What a good first 90 days looks like
- Weeks 1–2: understand. Access to analytics, ad accounts and CRM; interviews with founders and sales; a look at recent customer feedback.
- Weeks 2–4: measure. Fix tracking gaps so you can see signups, activations and revenue by source. Without this, every later experiment is guesswork.
- Weeks 4–6: prioritise. A short written plan naming the one or two biggest opportunities, why, and what will be tested first.
- Weeks 6–12: test and review. A small number of well-designed experiments, each with a hypothesis, a success measure and an honest write-up of the result, including the ones that fail.
How quickly results show up depends on your traffic volume, sales cycle and how fast your team can implement. Low-volume B2B businesses take longer to read experiments than high-volume consumer apps, and a good consultant will say so upfront.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Which funnel stage do you think matters most for a business like ours, and why?
- Walk me through an experiment you designed: the hypothesis, the measure and what you learned.
- What would you need from our team each week?
- Who does the execution, you or someone else?
- What would make you tell us to stop working with you?
- How will you report progress, and on which numbers?
The answers to the third and fourth questions often decide whether the engagement works. More questions are in how to choose a digital marketing consultant in India.
Red flags
- Guaranteed growth numbers before they have seen your data.
- A fixed playbook applied to every business regardless of model or stage.
- Vanity reporting: followers, impressions and traffic with no link to signups or revenue.
- No interest in retention or what happens after the first purchase.
- Pressure to increase ad spend before tracking is in place.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to hire a growth marketing consultant in India?
It depends on whether you need advice or execution, how many hours a month, and how many channels are involved. As a reference point, my monthly retainer is ₹75,000–₹1,50,000 + GST for 10–25 hours of strategy and review, and a one-off audit is ₹19,999 + GST. Execution by a team costs more.
What is the difference between a growth marketer and a digital marketer?
A digital marketer usually focuses on running channels such as ads, SEO or social. A growth marketer looks at the whole funnel, including activation and retention, and works through structured experiments. In practice the labels overlap, so ask what they actually do day to day.
Should an early-stage Indian startup hire a growth consultant?
If you have no paying customers yet, usually not; founder-led selling and customer conversations teach you more. Once you have some customers and want a repeatable channel, a short strategy engagement or audit is often the right first step, rather than a long retainer.
Is a growth consultant better than a full-time growth hire?
A consultant suits you when you need senior judgement part-time, or are still working out which channels matter. A full-time hire suits you once the work is steady and you know the skills required. Many companies use a consultant first, then hire with a clearer brief.
How do I measure whether a growth consultant is working?
Agree on one or two business measures upfront, such as qualified signups, activation rate or revenue from a channel, and review them monthly. Also judge the quality of thinking: clear priorities, honest write-ups of failed tests and better decisions by your team.
A sensible next step
If you are unsure whether you need a growth consultant, a channel specialist or a fractional lead, a 30-minute strategy session at ₹2,999 + GST is a low-cost way to talk it through. I will tell you plainly if I am not the right fit.
