SEO cost per month in India depends less on a "package name" and more on four things: how big and messy your website is, how competitive your searches are, how much content and technical work has to be produced every month, and who is doing the thinking versus the typing. A small local business and a large e-commerce site can both be quoted "monthly SEO", yet be buying completely different amounts of work. This post explains what goes into a monthly SEO fee, how the drivers change by business type, and how to tell whether a quote is fair for your situation.

If you want to know what an independent SEO consultant charges specifically, I have covered that separately in SEO consultant cost in India. This one is about the monthly packages agencies and consultants sell, and what you are actually paying for inside them.

What a monthly SEO fee is really buying

Every monthly SEO retainer, whatever it is called, is a mix of five kinds of work. The price moves depending on how much of each is included and who does it.

  • Strategy and prioritisation. Deciding which pages, queries and fixes matter this month and which can wait. This is senior time and the part most often thinned out in cheap packages.
  • Technical maintenance. Crawl and indexing checks in Google Search Console, fixing broken pages, redirects, site speed issues, structured data, and making sure new pages are actually indexed.
  • On-page work. Rewriting titles, headings and page copy so each page clearly answers one intent, improving internal links, and fixing thin or duplicate pages.
  • Content production. New service pages, location pages, guides and FAQs. This is usually the largest variable cost, because good writing that reflects real expertise takes time.
  • Authority building and reporting. Earning genuine mentions and links, managing review and listing hygiene where relevant, and a monthly report that explains what changed and why.

When two quotes look very different, the gap is almost always in strategy time and content volume. Technical checks and reporting look similar on paper; the thinking behind them does not.

The cost drivers that change your monthly number

1. Size and condition of the website

A twenty-page service website with clean structure needs far less ongoing technical attention than a catalogue with thousands of product and filter pages. Sites built on page builders with heavy scripts, or sites migrated without proper redirects, carry a backlog of fixes that someone has to work through before new content can perform. If your site has that backlog, expect the first few months to cost more effort than later months.

2. How competitive your searches are

Ranking for "dentist in a specific Gurugram sector" is a very different job from ranking for a national query where established publishers and large brands already dominate. Competitive queries need more content depth, more authority, and more patience. The fee usually reflects this as more content and outreach effort, not as a different "tier" label.

3. Content volume and who writes it

Ask how many pieces of content are included per month, how long they are, and who writes them. A package that includes a fixed number of generic articles is not comparable to one where a specialist interviews your team and writes pages that reflect your actual process. If you can provide subject-matter input yourself, costs can come down because the writer spends less time researching.

4. Number of locations, languages or markets

Every extra city, branch or language multiplies some of the work: separate location pages, separate Google Business Profiles, separate review management. A business with one office and one with fifteen branches should not be paying the same monthly fee.

5. Who does the work: senior person or junior team

Many packages are sold by a senior person and then delivered by a junior team. That is not automatically bad, but you should know who reviews the work and how much of their time you actually get. The comparison in SEO agency vs SEO consultant cost goes deeper into this trade-off.

6. Reporting and integration depth

A screenshot of rankings is cheap. Connecting Search Console, GA4 and your CRM so you can see which pages produce enquiries is more work, but it is what tells you whether SEO is paying for itself. If leads matter more than traffic, budget for this.

Monthly SEO cost drivers by business type

I will not quote market price bands, because they vary too widely and most published numbers are not comparable. Instead, here is what typically drives the effort, and therefore the monthly fee, for common business types.

Business typeWhat drives the monthly effortWhere cheap packages usually fall short
Local service business (clinic, salon, CA firm, single location)Google Business Profile upkeep, a handful of strong service pages, reviews, local citationsGeneric blog posts instead of fixing service pages and profile details
Multi-location businessLocation pages per branch, multiple profiles, consistent business details, review handling at scaleCopy-pasted location pages with only the city name changed
B2B services or manufacturingDeep service and industry pages, technical content, case material, lead tracking to CRMWriters without domain knowledge producing surface-level content
E-commerce / D2CCategory and product page optimisation, crawl control for filters, structured data, site speedIgnoring technical crawl issues and focusing only on blogs
Real estateProject and locality pages, frequent inventory changes, duplicate listing controlOld project pages left live, creating thin and outdated content
SaaS or tech productUse-case and comparison content, documentation, integration pages, signup trackingKeyword-stuffed articles that do not match how buyers actually search

Use this table to read any proposal you receive. If the business type on the left matches yours and the proposal spends most of its budget on the "falls short" column, the price may be low but the value will be lower.

How I price monthly SEO work

To keep this honest, here is how my own pricing works. SEO consulting starts from ₹50,000 + GST per month. That covers strategy, prioritisation, technical direction and review, with your in-house team or existing vendor doing the implementation. If you want my team to do the hands-on execution as well, that starts from ₹2,50,000 + GST per month, because it includes content production, technical fixes and authority work, not just direction.

If you are not sure what you need yet, an SEO audit at ₹19,999 + GST is often the cheaper first step. It tells you what is broken and what is worth doing before you commit to any monthly spend. International clients pay a flat USD fee without GST.

How to judge whether a monthly SEO quote is fair

Price alone tells you very little. These questions tell you much more.

  1. What exactly happens in month one, two and three? A good proposal names the first fixes and pages, not just "on-page optimisation".
  2. Who is doing the work, and who reviews it? Ask for names and roles, and how many hours of senior time are included.
  3. How many content pieces, of what type and length? And will they be based on input from your team, or written from general research?
  4. What will you change on the website, and who has access? You should always own your website, Search Console, GA4 and Google Business Profile accounts.
  5. How will results be reported? Look for enquiries, calls and conversions alongside traffic, not ranking screenshots alone.
  6. What is the notice period? Long lock-ins with no deliverables defined are a warning sign.

If you are comparing several proposals, the framework in how to compare digital marketing proposals will help you put them side by side.

Red flags in monthly SEO packages

  • Guaranteed rankings or "page one in 30 days". No one controls Google's results. Promises like this usually mean shortcuts that can hurt you later.
  • Bulk backlinks counted by number. A package that promises a fixed count of links each month is usually buying low-quality placements.
  • No access to your own accounts. If the vendor creates Search Console or Business Profile accounts in their name, you lose history when you leave.
  • Identical packages for every client. If a clinic and an e-commerce brand get the same deliverables list, the work is not built around either of them.
  • Reports with no explanation. Charts without commentary on what was done, why, and what is next are a sign that no one is thinking about your account.

When monthly SEO is not the right spend yet

Monthly SEO only works if the website can convert the visitors it brings. If your site already gets reasonable traffic but very few enquiries, fix that first, as I explain in website traffic but no leads. Similarly, if you need results within weeks, SEO is not the right primary channel; it compounds over months, and how long depends on your starting point and competition, which I cover in how long SEO takes to work.

There are also situations where a one-time project is better than a retainer: a site migration, a technical clean-up after a redesign, or building a set of service pages that your team can then maintain. In those cases, pay for the project, then decide whether ongoing work is needed.

A simple way to set your monthly SEO budget

  1. Work out what an enquiry or sale is worth to you. Use your average order or contract value and your close rate.
  2. Decide what you can do in-house. If someone on your team can write or update pages with guidance, you may only need strategy and review.
  3. Match the work to your business type. Use the table above to list the work that actually matters for you.
  4. Commit for long enough to judge it. SEO needs several months before you can fairly assess it, so budget for a period you can sustain without pressure.
  5. Review quarterly, not weekly. Look at enquiries, indexed pages and visibility trends every quarter and adjust scope.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum monthly budget for SEO in India?

There is no meaningful universal minimum, because the work needed varies so much by site and competition. What matters is whether the budget covers the work your business type actually needs. A very low fee usually means very little senior time and generic deliverables.

Is monthly SEO better than a one-time SEO project?

It depends on what is wrong. One-time projects suit migrations, technical clean-ups and building core pages. Monthly work suits businesses that need continuous content, authority building and monitoring in a competitive market.

Why do SEO prices vary so much between agencies?

Mostly because they include different amounts of strategy time, content and technical work, and because some are delivered by senior specialists while others are delivered by junior teams. Compare deliverables and people, not package names.

Does SEO pricing include GST?

For Indian businesses, GST is usually charged on top of the quoted fee, so check whether a quote says "+ GST". My fees are quoted plus GST for Indian clients, while international clients pay a flat USD amount.

Should I pay for SEO and Google Ads at the same time?

Often yes, if budget allows. Ads can bring enquiries while SEO builds up, and ad search-term data can show which queries convert, which helps you choose SEO priorities.
